Spotlight on Charlotte Leonard

‍It’s a challenge for me as an author with a new pen name to gain visibility so I’m grateful to several talented and respected authors – some I know personally; some I don’t know at all – who provided wonderful early reviews of An Ordinary House.

‍As a thank you to them for taking time out of their busy schedules to read and write about my book, I’m featuring each author on my blog with a spotlight on their work.

Charlotte Leonard studied Law, travelled the world and embarked on a career in advertising. She lives with her family in London and loves wild water swimming.

‍She is the author of two contemporary book club fiction titles.

‍Afterwards was shortlisted for the Bath Novel Award as an unpublished manuscript and published by Simon & Schuster in 2022. It explores the subject of male suicide and is the story of sudden loss, grief and what happens afterwards.‍‍ ‍

One little white lie. One tiny omission. A slight manipulation of the truth. But that moment would change everything.

‍It was the small things that weighed Sarah down. The dirty dishes abandoned in the sink. The empty bottle of milk put back inside the fridge. The clothes left crumpled on the floor. A life of never-ending mental load and constant demands. Somewhere along the way, Sarah had become a caretaker for everyone around her, both at home and at work.

‍Then came the lie. One harmless white lie, she thought. Just a little shift in the narrative. And for a while everything became better. But one lie wasn’t enough. It was soon followed by another. And another. Until the truth became something unrecognizable, a distant memory swallowed by fiction. She never intended for it to spiral this way. It was just one little white lie.

‍But the truth would inevitably threaten everything she held dear…

‍I had the privilege of reading an early copy and provided a blurb quote: ‘Despicable, controversial and peep-through-your-fingers compelling. A marmite must-read for book clubs.’

Charlotte had this to say about An Ordinary House:

‍‘Dark, gripping and an absolutely compulsive read. An Ordinary House is utterly addictive and impossible to forget.’‍‍ ‍
