Spotlight on Michael Wood
Spotlight on Michael Wood
It’s a challenge for me as an author with a new pen name to gain visibility so I’m grateful to several talented and respected authors – some I know personally; some I don’t know at all – who provided wonderful early reviews of An Ordinary House.
As a thank you to them for taking time out of their busy schedules to read and write about my book, I’m featuring each author on my blog with a spotlight on their work.
Michael Wood is the author of the bestselling DCI Matilda Darke crime series. I first came across Michael’s books went my HarperCollins editor, who was also Michael’s editor, asked me to review The Hangman’s Hold, book 4 in the Matilda Darke series. I enjoyed the book and provided a quote: ‘Solid storytelling and great unravelling of plot. Michael Wood ups the pace as the noose tightens.’ I’ve been hooked on the Matilda Darke series ever since.
The series has now reached 13 full-length titles and 3 shorts. I’m eagerly awaiting novel number 14, First One To Die, due out in October.
My ‘favourite’ is The Lost Children (book 9). I put ‘favourite’ in inverted commas because this is not a cosy, snuggle-up-at-bedtime read. It deals unflinchingly with a shocking subject. For me, it took Michael’s writing to another level. Here’s my review.
The Lost Children by Michael Wood
April 2020: Lockdown. DI Christian Brady has been tracing victims of systemic abuse at a local children’s home after a high-profile accusation pitched it into the spotlight – a case that couldn’t be more personal for the detective.
As DCI Matilda Darke and her team piece together the disturbing picture of the history of the home, it soon becomes clear that this is much bigger than they ever suspected. But nothing will prepare them for what they are about to uncover.

Michael had this to say about An Ordinary House:
‘A deeply emotive and disturbing psychological thriller, intelligently written, and peopled with real characters who will stay with you long after the final page.’
