Front Page Fridays Week-46
Front Page Fridays Week-46
Welcome to Front Page Fridays Week-46. On Fridays I showcase the first page of a new book.
My Front Page Fridays Week-46 guest is Jackie Baldwin with the first page of her brand-new cosy crime, Poison at The Wild Haggis Bookshop.
Here’s the opening:
Chapter One
‘I’m starting to feel like I’m on a factory production line,’ scowled Morna. ‘There’s a reason I never watched Blue Peter as a child.’
‘You’re doing great,’ soothed Beth. ‘Just another four boxes and that will be us done for the month.’ The large table looked like a nursery class had visited with tissue paper, books, beads and micro samples from local suppliers all bundled into one gigantic mess.
‘Stop moaning, Morna,’ said Chloe, deftly scrunching up tissue paper. ‘You’d know all about it if you worked in a real factory.’ She placed the lid on the red candy-striped box and tied the ribbon with a flourish before adding on some beads and a sprig of heather tucked in to finish it off.
‘It’s all very well for you,’ continued Morna glaring at her friend and colleague. ‘You probably do origami with the bog roll every time you go to the loo. I’m just not good at all that stuff.’
‘I don’t know whether to feel complimented or offended by that,’ said Chloe, one perfectly manicured eyebrow shooting up.
‘It’s so sexist that Lachlan’s been allowed to escape the glitter fest,’ Morna continued. ‘Just because he’s a bloke.’
‘That’s simply not true,’ said Beth, stung. ‘Someone had to hold the fort by dealing with customers while we’re all in here getting the subscription boxes ready. Lachlan does more than his fair share.’
‘Anyway,’ said Chloe, leaning in for the knockout blow, a gleam in her eye. ‘Whose idea was this?’
‘Mine,’ growled Morna, rolling her eyes.
About Poison at The Wild Haggis Bookshop
A deliciously twisty Highland mystery that will keep you guessing until the very last page. Perfect for fans of cozy crime with a bite!
Beth Cunningham's clever book subscription service is the talk of Oban, complete with local treats and hand-picked reads. But when elderly customer Nora Kelly is found dead in her armchair, Beth's book boxes are identified as the murder weapon. It seems a vengeful killer has the Wild Haggis Bookshop in their sights...
Detective Sergeant Logan Hunter insists on round-the-clock protection for Beth, which means close quarters with the infuriating – and increasingly attractive – officer. As spring approaches and the bookshop fills with bountiful blooms and excited children, Beth's investigation uncovers secrets that someone has spent decades trying to bury. With time running out, Beth must untangle a twisted web of lies that stretches far beyond this quaint Highland town. But when the killer strikes again, even Logan's protection may not be enough to save her...
